Airport Shopping...

I travel frequently for business so I spend a lot of time in airports. For the most part if you’ve been to one airport you’ve been to them all, but over the years I’ve found a few hidden gems. These are the stores that I make a point to visit each time I pass through.

LOS ANGELES (LAX) International Airport – Terminal 4

  • Destination LA / LA Edge – Very trendy lifestyle shop that you wouldn’t expect to find at the airport. Clothing, purses, jewelry, spa/beauty products and plenty of other unique gift items. I’ve purchased things here I’ve never seen anywhere else.

MIAMI (MIA) International Airport

  • Bijoux Terner (aka the $10 store) – What’s not to love about a trendy little accessories store delightfully displayed by color? This is a great little shop of accessories displayed by color. They carry pashmina scarves in 25 great colors, watches, necklaces, earrings and bracelets. At $10 each the items are all fashionably faux, but it’s still fun to mix in a few low price items each season.

On a side note, I’ve noticed several other “$10 Store” knock-offs in various airports – I don’t find them to be as interesting as Bijoux Terner. Check their website to find other locations around the world. www.bijouxterner.com

  • Café Versailles – There’s plenty of debate over which Cuban restaurant is better but I always find myself headed for Café Versailles. They make a caramel linzer-type cookie that is my favorite indulgence.

STOCKHOLM Arlanda Airport – Terminal 5

  • Motiv Stockholm – This is a small shop that specializes in artistic black & white images of Stockholm and Sweden. The images are sold as unframed/framed prints in various sizes and on trinkets, like bags, magnets, and mugs. The photo images are way more interesting than those you would see in a typical tourist postcard and the trinkets are certainly more display-worthy back home.

  • DesignTorget – Best place to browse for very modern items that you would normally only find in high-end gift shops or online. If you’re looking for the very latest trends in home décor, kitchen accessories, toys and books by known and unknown designers this needs to be on your list of places to visit at Arlanda Airport. http://www.designtorget.se/designtorget/en/

 WASHINGTON Dulles Airport – Concourse B, C, and D

  • America! –Regardless of your political persuasion, this store is fun to browse and the merchandise is higher quality than more general tourist spots. Wide variety of items (clothing, gifts, books, décor) imprinted with various themes including Patriotic, White House, Military, President, and First Lady.
